Swapan's Picks: 5 Health Supplements That I Cannot Do Without

I am a firm believer in supplements, although many people are either sceptical about them or see them as medicines. I see them as a necessity. Here are five that I unfailingly take. Of course, it is best that you check with your doctor before you pop any or all of these.

Hyaluronic Acid
By the time, you reach the age of 40, the synthesis of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is roughly half of what is required for your body. HA improves skin hydration, stimulates production of collagen in skin, maintains skin elasticity, cushions joints and nerve tissues, has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and maintains the fluid in the eye tissues, which may help to protect against numerous possible eye concerns. It also enhances muscle strength and mental alertness.

Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin is, unarguably, the most potent antioxidant available. Consider the numbers: it is 6000 times stronger than Vitamin C, 550 times stronger than green tea catechins, 550 times stronger than Vitamin E, 75 times stronger than alpha-lipoic acid, 40 times stronger than beta carotene. It suppresses DNA damage, boosts the immune system, helps blood pressure, prevents sore joints and reduces lactic acid.

CoQ10
Most people don't know this and most docs don't tell you this. Statins while blocking the production of cholesterol, also block the production of CoQ10. And CoQ10 deficiencies can lead to risk of heart attacks, nerve damage, fatigue, liver and kidney complications. CoQ10 supports the cognitive function; it fights free radical damage and improves the health of the cells in your mouth and gums. Also helpful for people undergoing chemotherapy.

Magnesium
Magnesium has to be the most under-rated mineral in our diets. Also note that grains that have been through the refining process are stripped of most of their magnesium. Up to 46% of patients admitted into a tertiary cancer centre have a magnesium deficiency. Magnesium creates energy in every cell of the body by activating ATP -- the storage molecule that fuels every cell. Magnesium also keeps a check on anxiety.

Salmon Oil

Salmon oil is wonderful for your heart and eyes. It is also a great source of tryptophan, a 100% natural sedative that improves sleep. Salmon oil also has huge anti-inflammatory properties. However, if you are on blood thinners, take it easy with salmon oil. It thins the blood.
