PHOTOS: Life On The Disappearing Island Of Ghoramara

I recently visited the island of Ghoramara to document how climate change is affecting human beings. This island in the Sundarbans Delta of the Bay of Bengal has lost about 75% of its landmass to waters rising due to climate change, causing two-thirds of its population--who can only be called climate refugees--to move elsewhere.

Global warming has caused snow to melt from the Himalayan glaciers, the water feeding into the Bay of Bengal, and the Sundarbans are facing an unsteady future. Ghoramara spans only 4.45 sq km today. Another nearby island, Lohachara, has already been claimed by the water and researchers believe that 15% of the Sundarban Islands will go underwater by 2020.

According to the last election data, 3000 people officially reside on Ghoramara, but many men now work in construction sites in Kerala.
