As we wrap up 2015 and open our arms to 2016, we are filled with optimism and motivation to make it our best year yet. While health-related resolutions tend to be the norm, it's important that such goals go beyond achieving a certain number on the scale. To truly make 2016 your healthiest year yet, here are some goals to start working towards.
1. Add, rather than subtract, to your diet
Instead of denying yourself certain items, focus on eating more nutrient-dense foods like vegetables, avocados, whole grains and lean sources of protein. In doing so, you will crowd out the less-healthy foods and also feel less deprived with your diet.
2. Detox your life
Just as you detox your body to feel lighter, cleanse your environment by removing toxic people from it. Our environment has a tremendous impact on our outlook and ultimately our success in life. Respect yourself enough to eliminate people who bring negative energy and leave you feeling weighed down and mentally drained. Ask yourself: Does X make me happy? Does X help me grow?
3. Stop doing exercises that you hate
The best exercise is any kind that you can be consistent with! If you can't stand running, there's no need to grudgingly pull out those shoes every morning. The only way you are likely to continue working out by the time December 2016 comes along is if you truly enjoy it. Over the next few weeks, try out various workout routines until you find one that you look forward to doing -- results will follow shortly.
4. Abstain from negative self-talk
It's not easy, but in order to become successful at making healthy choices and truly becoming a happy individual, you must avoid negative self-talk and begin to cultivate the habit of positive thinking. Rather than doubt your potential, focus on really appreciating and cherishing your life...even if you need to fake it initially.
5. Start reading labels
Be it food or beauty substances, more and more manufacturers are pumping their products with a shocking number of harmful chemicals and preservatives. Repeated use of such products could eventually lead to a number of health issues, including cancer, infertility, obesity and acne. The easiest way to slash your risk is by educating yourself so that you can make informed decisions about what you put both in and on your body.
In order to truly get the most out of the year ahead, let's begin our journey towards better health TODAY! With only two weeks left until we bid farewell to 2015, let's not waste any more time.
